Park Kyoung-Ho

Yeo Sang-Won
Abstract
Treatment of hearing loss continues to pose major challenge to the otolaryngologist, as more than 30% of adults beyond 65 years of age have a debilitating hearing disorder. Most inner ear disorders involve irreversible loss of hair cells and their associated neurons. Recent advances in cell biology and genetics have raised hopes for the regeneration or protection of these cells. The recent isolation of adult stem cells from the human and guinea pig spiral ganglion and mouse utricle offers a viable options for the treatment of hearing loss. And finding the embryonic stem cells that are capable of differentiating into inner ear hair cells further expands the possibility of developing restorative therapy in inner ear disorders. This review introduce recent stem cell research and achievement focusing on the inner ear.
